Acne Q & A

Reese Family Practice

What is acne?

Acne is caused by a combination of hormones, oily skin, and bacteria. Acne forms when oil and dead skin cells clog your hair follicles. It appears on your face, forehead, upper back, shoulders, and chest.

Around 80% of teens and young adults get acne. Acne can be a chronic condition or flare up from time to time. If left untreated, acne can leave long-lasting scars. With acne, you may feel embarrassed and self-conscious about your appearance.

What are the symptoms of acne?

Your acne won’t necessarily be the same as someone else’s. Depending on the severity of your condition, you’ll experience one or more of these forms of acne:

  • Whiteheads: Whitish or flesh-colored bumps
  • Blackheads: Whiteheads that have opened up and turned dark from being exposed to the air (not because of trapped dirt)
  • Papules: Solid, pink, tender bumps under the surface of your skin
  • Pimples (pustules): Larger, inflamed bumps with a pus center
  • Nodules: Painful, hard, inflamed lumps deep under your skin
  • Cysts: Deep, very large, pus-filled lumps deep under your skin

Pimples may go away on their own with at-home care. However, moderate-to-severe types of acne, including nodules and cysts, can cause skin complications and scars and are best treated by a medical professional at Reese Family Practice.

How is acne treated?

At Reese Family Practice, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to treatment. A practitioner fully assesses the condition of your skin to tailor your acne treatment regime to your type of acne.

Treatment can include face washes, topical creams, and prescription medicines to combat bacteria and oiliness, reduce inflammation, and speed up skin cell renewal. When you begin treatment, your skin may briefly look like the treatment isn’t working before it gets better. When your skin heals from acne, pits and scars may remain, no matter how well you’ve cared for your skin.

How are acne scars treated?

The Cynosure Icon is a safe, noninvasive laser technology to help you leave acne scars behind. The laser light targets scar tissue, breaking it down over time while promoting new cells to form.

Treatments are quick, taking 30 minutes, and you can get back to your daily activities right away. Although results vary, you should see smoother skin after 3-7 sessions.

If you’d like to learn about your options to clear up your skin or fade your acne scars, call today to book online to schedule a consultation with Reese Family Practice.
